Several types of motorcycles exist today, and they each have their appeal catering to different people.
If you are looking for a reference for these bikes or love motorcycles in general and just want to know more about them, here is a list of their types and perks that separate them from the rest.
Standard-type motorcycles are a common favorite because of their simple design. This type is suited for all purposes and has variations from 125cc up to 1,000cc, and includes storage. Perfect for a first and all-around ride.
Furthermore, this type of motorcycle is highly customizable and can fit tanks, bags, seat racks, and luggage racks. The ergonomics are neutral as it combines upright seating, comfortable distance from the handlebars, and short to mid-range seat height to fit all levels of riders, from beginners to highly experienced.
Manufactured for speed and agility, it is a motorcycle specifically made for sports with forward-leaning ergonomics. The perk that makes Sport-type motorcycles stand out is their weight.
These bikes are generally lighter due to parts made of aluminum and other lightweight materials, making them easier to maneuver side-to-side for corner turns.
The seat height is usually higher to allow leaning farther without scraping the fairings or footpegs, which is difficult for shorter riders to handle.
And next up is the Touring type of motorcycle, typically larger than most bike types and is meant for cross-country touring.
These bikes offer a lot of storage for your luggage and can travel for hours at a time. Its large fairings are made to block wind and hold up against harsh weather while riding.
Touring motorcycles are made to adventure on wide and long stretches of roads with their powerful engine. The size, however, makes it challenging for newcomers to enjoy the experience.
Scooters are pretty much the safest and most stylish type of motorcycle. It is not built to run at high speeds on a highway, but it is more suited to cruise city streets.
These motorcycles don’t offer much storage, are very light in weight, and have smaller fairings making them easy to navigate through metropolitan areas. Scooters come in 50cc to 500cc and have enough power to commute.
A moped could be called a sibling of the Scooter-type bike because of their similarities in functionality and features. But mopeds are made to be a lot lighter and with a smaller engine (50cc or less).
Moped motorcycles are also limited in storage space & power with no fairings but are also very stylish and customizable.
In addition to that, the lower seat height, light frame, and small engine make the learning curve a lot less steep.
And finally, Off-road bikes. This type of motorcycle is very light in weight for easy maneuvering through rough terrain. Mostly catered to extreme sports riders.
These types have taller seat heights to accommodate their large suspension travel. The handlebars are midrange, allowing the rider to vary their riding position, and usually come with a small front fairing or none.
The engine size of off-road bikes can range from 125cc to 450cc and is great for all riding skill levels.
Now that you know more about these motorcycles, you can estimate which one would be a good choice to get if you are planning to buy one. Things you need to consider are your skill level, interests, and preference.
If you plan to use a motorcycle for commuting, then a standard type is a common choice. If you like to feel the rush of adrenaline when you are on a ride, you might want a Sports bike for highways or an Off-road bike for motocross.
