​Jet boats require a certain etiquette, ensuring that you’re following the right code of conduct when you own one and set off on a new adventure. The etiquette for jet boats is more than the social norms, and it’s also essential for your safety. 

To guide you through the proper behavior when owning a jet boat, here are the do’s and don’ts to remember during boat navigation, boat and dock launches, and anchoring. 

Boat Navigation
During boating navigation, you must be fully equipped with knowledge of the rules and regulations to be aware of the accepted system. Here are what you should and should not attempt to do when navigating your boats:

1. Two boats meeting each other should pass from port to port and turn to starboard. Doing this allows each captain to determine the intentions of one another, preventing any collision. 
2. A sailboat is only considered a powerboat when the sails are set up and equipped with an engine. 
3. If you encounter a situation wherein another boat plans to overtake, remain at your course and speed and let the other boat go. As a captain, it’s a part of your responsibility to avoid collisions as much as possible, regardless of who’s the right of way. 
4. Human-powered vessels such as kayaks, canoes, and SUPs don’t have the right of way compared to other vessels such as sailboats. 
5. Two boats sailing both under sail have equal rights of way. However, the one located on the starboard is prioritized over the boat on the port. 

Boat and Dock Launches 
During your boat or dock launch, you must follow these essential tips to prevent any issues and keep a peaceful ride. 

1. Always ensure that you’re on time when loading or launching.
2. Never delay the departure of your jet boat from its trailer. 
3. Load your guests and your other gear from the dock instead of on the boat ramp. 
4. Avoid draining, washing, or unloading on the boat ramp. 
5. Don’t kill time by waiting at fuel stations. Refill your fuel, pay your bill, and leave. 
6. It is always a good idea to move your boat. 

Anchoring
For anchoring your jet boats, make sure you’re aware of the following do’s and don’ts. 

1. Avoid tying your boat to another boat while anchored. 
2. Avoid setting more than an anchor to prevent collision with other vessels when everyone is on your boat.
3. Respect others at your anchorage; avoid overspeeding, especially when people are swimming or snorkeling. 
4. Place your jet boats in their original places to avoid disturbing other boat owners.
